Your child may be able to get free transport to school, depending on how far their walk is, the type of school they attend or if you are on a low income.
Distance from school
All children between 5 and 16 are eligible for free transport if they go to their nearest qualifying school and live at least:
- 2 miles from the school if they are under 8-years-old
- 3 miles from the school if they are 8 or older
Walking distances are measured by the shortest available route and where a child, accompanied if necessary, can walk with safety to school.
If your child attends a school on faith grounds, we will count this as your nearest qualifying school and will provide free home to school transport if:
- Your child is a regularly practicing member of a church of the same faith as the school
- They live at least 2 miles from the school if they are under 8-years-old or at least 3 miles from the school if they are 8 or older.
A family is considered to be on a low income if a child is entitled to free school meals or parents receive the full amount of Working Tax Credit.
If you are considered as on a low income, your child is eligible for free home to school transport as long as they live more than 2 miles (but no more than 6 miles) from one of their three nearest qualifying schools.
