Is my child eligible for free home to school transport?

Your child may be able to get free transport to school, depending on how far their walk is, the type of school they attend or if you are on a low income.

Distance from school

All children between 5 and 16 are eligible for free transport if they go to their nearest qualifying school and live at least:

  • 2 miles from the school if they are under 8-years-old
  • 3 miles from the school if they are 8 or older

Walking distances are measured by the shortest available route and where a child, accompanied if necessary, can walk with safety to school.

Faith

If your child attends a school on faith grounds, we will count this as your nearest qualifying school and will provide free home to school transport if:

  • Your child is a regularly practicing member of a church of the same faith as the school
  • They live at least 2 miles from the school if they are under 8-years-old or at least 3 miles from the school if they are 8 or older.

Low income

A family is considered to be on a low income if a child is entitled to free school meals or parents receive the full amount of Working Tax Credit.

If you are considered as on a low income, your child is eligible for free home to school transport as long as they live more than 2 miles (but no more than 6 miles) from one of their three nearest qualifying schools.
